The roadman and the boy

One beautiful sunny day, a roadman was working on a very complicated assignment. He had to lay square-shaped paving stones in a curve with a straight edge. He was always left with a small gap between the stone and the edge. So he would break a stone into pieces and try each piece to see if it would fill the gap.
Next to him sat a young boy of around seven, watching all this very closely. By this time, the roadman had already tried 4 pieces but none of them would fit the gap. All of a sudden, the boy shouts: "That's the piece you want", pointing to a piece lying next to the roadman. To the roadman's astonishment, the piece was a perfect fit!

The moral of this story?
You can get things done in two ways:
  • first do, and then think
  • or the exact opposite: first think and then act
The roadman tried to see if a piece would fit, the boy studied the pieces to see if they would fit.
